August 2009
Featured Guest Artist:
I have not yet met our featured Guest Artist, however Sherre has had the privilege of meeting her while they attended the same class together at the Asilomar Art Retreat recently and suggested that we feature Lindy Trenholm in our August Zine.

After viewing Lindy’s amazing projects, I quickly agreed.

I found her wonderful altered books to be: whimsical, full of bright & beautiful colors and I felt they were a representation of Lindy herself. I’m sure you will agree that Lindy is one very talented lady and I am honored to be able to present her as our guest in this August 2009 zine.

“We are often asked as children, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”. It is a question I believe we often ask ourselves throughout life. It isn’t what we want to be, but what we want to do during our lives, so the question should really be: “What is our passion?” From childhood until now, my passion and form of inner expression has been my art. It has taken on many forms over the years and as I journey down the path of life, I have learned to connect the technical with the spiritual and heartfelt passion that translates into a tangible expression of who I am today, via mixed media.”

“My avenue of expression is telling my untold stories via altered mixed media books. Whether they are board books, canvas or most recently, altered boxes of all sorts, I will incorporate them into my art. The desire to experiment with the different art mediums available to us only helps me to refuel the processes I undertake with each and every new project. I have a tendency to layer a lot. I layer paper, paint and crackle. I love to scratch the different surfaces and add all kinds of ephemeral images to the point of bursting the spine. It is an opportunity to experience visually and “to hold in your hands” what your heart and mind has to give.”

“My journey has taken me from the form of illustration, to stained glass, ceramics, metalsmithing, board books and currently to what is termed: book assemblages. I am only one of a few lucky people who have found work outside the home, which allows me to be creative. When I’m not at my part-time job as a visual merchandising coordinator for Tiffany & Co., I’ll be in my home based studio: “The Green Door Studio” working on my most recent projects. Although I live in a big city, we have thankfully been able to create a sort of paradise refuge, in the midst of modern day madness. Behind the green door, the real world is left behind and the imagination no longer has to be guarded.

“To rejuvenate my passions for life and art, I venture yearly, to southern France, which has become the elixir for my soul. I am surrounded by mentors and friends of like mind and it is during this time which allows me to immerse myself in an environment that feeds my passion.” (Lindy will again be in southern France in the summer of 2010 and will be teaching a class on altered books. I have posted the information for anyone interested in attending.)
